Ingram Micro Celebrates 40th Birthday
CEO Alain Monié says a continued focus on evolving technologies and exceeding customer expectations will drive growth for many more decades
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ingram Micro Inc. today is celebrating 40 years of success in technology and supply chain services, marking the milestone with worldwide celebrations to recognize the associates, customers and business partners past and present that have helped the company grow into a global leader in the more than 160 countries it serves.
“Achieving 40 years of success is quite an accomplishment given today’s fast-paced business environment, with disruptors and displacers around every corner,” said Alain Monié, Ingram Micro CEO. “It takes a significant focus and dedication by our people to maintain relevance as a company. Our 35,000 associates around the world consistently look to the future, embrace change and anticipate the needs of our valued customer and vendor partners, to ensure we are always evolving our business ahead of market shifts to provide optimal support in helping them profitably grow their businesses.”
“Our organization has come a long way since its modest beginnings in 1979, when two teachers got together to distribute computer products under the name Micro D,” Monié continued. “There is much more we plan to accomplish as we continue to build upon our industry-leading position for decades to come.”
Celebrations are taking place at Ingram Micro offices across the globe, including at its corporate headquarters in Irvine.
Ingram Micro recently achieved a significant financial milestone, exceeding $50 billion in annual revenues for the first time and delivering record profitability for its 2018 year.
Company History and Milestones
Ingram Micro traces its roots to the founding of Micro D, Inc. in July 1979, by husband and wife Geza Czige and Lorraine Mecca. The company rapidly expanded nationwide and went public in 1983. In March 1989, Ingram Industries acquired all stock of Micro D.
Meanwhile, in 1982, entrepreneurs Ronald Schreiber, Irwin Schreiber, Gerald Lippes and Paul Willax were busy founding Software Distribution Services in Buffalo, N.Y. Ingram Distribution Group, a unit of the privately held Ingram Industries, acquired Software Distribution Services in the spring of 1985 and renamed it Ingram Software. The operation was renamed Ingram Computer in February 1988.
Ingram Industries merged these two former competitors together in 1989 to create the microcomputer industry’s first $1 billion computer products wholesale distribution company, Ingram Micro D, with headquarters in Santa Ana, Calif. Officials dropped the “D” from the company’s name in January 1991.
In November 1996, Ingram Micro became a public company, listing its shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The company’s shares traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol IM until December 2016, when Ingram Micro was taken private.
With the success of Ingram Micro in the United States, the company expanded the reach of its services to global markets, making significant acquisitions to strengthen its presence in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
Under the direction of CEO Alain Monié, over the past seven years the company has successfully executed on more than 35 acquisitions valued in excess of $2 billion, effectively leveraging the company’s unmatched global infrastructure to expand its geographic reach and services portfolio into ecommerce, mobility and cloud platforms and solutions.
In 2011, Ingram Micro became the first distributor to launch a Cloud Marketplace for vendors and customer partners to transact cloud services and solutions. Since then, the company has grown its industry-leadership position in the cloud with several acquisitions, including SoftCom, Odin and Ensim, and recently surpassed three million active seats managed on the Ingram Micro Cloud Marketplace.
In 2012, the company acquired BrightPoint, creating the leading global provider of device lifecycle services and solutions for the mobility industry. In 2013, Ingram Micro purchased Shipwire and in 2015 added DocData to its portfolio, effectively securing a leadership position in the ecommerce fulfillment space, particularly for established and emerging retail brands. These and other acquisitions resulted in a full suite of high-demand commerce and services solution, including IT Asset Disposal, forward and reverse logistics services and IT product refurbishment and reuse.
